Although technically not a "weapon" the cane, when skillfully employed, can be an extremely effective self-defense tool. From ancient times, people of many different cultures around the world have carried staffs, canes, walking sticks, and umbrellas of different shapes, sizes, and materials. For centuries, those items were also found to be useful for defending oneself against man or beast. Therefore, it was a natural evolution for teachers of several Martial Arts to develop structured Cane training programs to be included in their students' curriculum. The Cane is perfectly legal to carry everywhere, anytime. It is not dangerous to handle, requires no maintenance, and it is fun and easy to learn. It is an excellent self-defense option for the elderly, and for those with certain physical limitation.
Grandmaster John Pellegrini, Founder of Combat Hapkido, started teaching the Cane in 1995. In 1997 he produced one of the first Cane training videos in the USA. Now, over 25 years later, he decided that it was time to update the program with additional techniques, and better production technology.
